Description:

The highly anticipated third book in the critically acclaimed and bestselling series takes the art of being wimpy to a whole new level.

Let’s face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley actually thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly” endeavors. Of course, Greg is able to easily sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. But when Greg’s dad threatens to send him to military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up . . . or get shipped out.

Greg and his family and friends, who make the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books a must-read for middle school readers, are back and at their best in this hilarious new installment of the series, which is sure to please current fans while attracting new ones.

Publishers Weekly-1/19/2009:

The third book in this genre-busting series is certain to enlarge Kinney’s presence on the bestseller lists, where the previous titles have taken up residence for the past two years. Kinney’s spot-on humor and winning formula of deadpan text set against cartoons are back in full force. This time, Greg starts off on New Year’s Day (he resolves to “help other people improve,” telling his mother, “I think you should work on chewing your potato chips more quietly”) and ends with summer vacation. As he fends off his father’s attempts to make him more of a man (the threat of military school looms), Greg’s hapless adventures include handing out anonymous valentines expressing his true feelings (“Dear James, You smell”), attempting to impress his classmate Holly and single-handedly wrecking his soccer team’s perfect season. Kinney allows himself some insider humor as well, with Greg noting the “racket” children’s book authors have going. “All you have to do is make up a character with a snappy name, and then make sure the character learns a lesson at the end of the book.” Greg, self-centered as ever, may be the exception proving that rule. Ages 8–12. (Jan.)

5Successful gift!Mar 14, 2010
My 8 year old grandaughter screamed when I gave her the book. She had borrowed one from her cousin, but could hardly wait to read this one. I understand there is a movie version coming out soon. Both boys and girls identify with the character and enjoy reading this book.

5Great book series!Mar 08, 2010
Purchased this for my 8 year old grandson at his request. He loves this whole series. Now they're making a movie and he's excited to see it. Love to have him reading!

4Positives and NegativesMar 03, 2010
My thoughts:
Positives:

* Really quick read
* Cartoons are always comical.
* Shows Greg is really starting to grow up and get new interests.
* Is perfect for everyone, especially for a little light reading.

Negatives:

* This was not as funny as the last two
* There is no real change in any of the other characters, so the same jokes have been told before.
* There are a lot of things that happen within this novel that mean absolutely nothing.
* He is extremely self-absorbed and therefore we have a limited view of everything that happens around him, I think that the more this series continues the less connection most boys will have with him.

5A 4th Grade Student ReviewMar 03, 2010
I give this book 3 stars because it is just like the other 3 books, if you read one no need to read them all. However some parts cracked me up. This book is by Jeff Kinny and this book is probably fiction. The main character is Greg Heffly. I think the authors propose is just entertainment. The mood is mostly funny for me. The theme I found was the author wanted to tell us how to survive middle school. I hope Jeff writes a 5th book that is a little different from the others. ~Farve

Jeff Kinney has made another great book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series guess which one it is...you guessed it, The Last Straw. In this book Greg is trying to make his family go for there New Years resolution but they are not going for it. Like Greg's mom she was going to stop chewing so loud but she didn't stop, his dad was going on a strict diet but it didn't happen, and his little brother Manny was throwing away his pacifier but it didn't last one minute. When Greg was little his dad said if you get out of bed you may run into Shel SWilverstein he still doesn't get out of bed. I have told you too much already so you have to read this book and find out the ending. ~Ray

5Amazing Wimpy Kid!Mar 02, 2010
This book is called Dairy of A Wimpy Kid The Last Straw. It's about a kid named Gregory (Greg) who has a bad life. The main characters are Mom, Manny (Greg's little brother), Rowley, Holy, Rodrick, Dad, and Greg. One of the main events is that Greg does not want to go to military academy (Spag Union.) Another event is that Greg's family went to Snella's birthday and Manny threw Snella's present in a fake tree, Greg was getting it but it fell down. The last main events is that Greg's school had a skate night and Greg went over to Holy to say something but she said are you Fregley and that mad Greg mad.

I like the book because it's funny and fun to read. The thing I liked the best was when Greg's pants fell down and he had Wonder Woman underwear. I don't have any parts I did not like. I think the writer (Jeff Kinney) did a very fantastic job.
